Reasons to keep a Sketchbook

Updated: Feb 22, 2019

Why everyone should have a sketchbook in their bag!

If you are an artist or simply someone who is looking to flex those creative muscles, a sketchbook is definitely a great way to keep those juices flowing! It is not only helps build your confidence, but you can also keep sketchbooks as your visual diary, or a procrastination tool which at some point may become useful material and inspiration.

“A sketch a day keeps the doctors away.”

Aside from the fact that keeping a visual diary is another way of entertaining yourself, it can also prove to be extremely beneficial when it comes to improving your mental health! Sketching, painting and doodling is a sure way to tackle the anxieties of life, if not rid them all together. And I don't know about you, but looking through my sketchbook at times is just like looking through Tumblr.

& here's a few other reasons

  1. Your sketchbook is just for you! There is no pressure, deadlines or client expectation. It's just for you to enjoy free-flowing creativity. You don't need to worry about whether it's good or bad, you can explore however you want as it is your journal for your eyes only. You can do something simple or go totally crazy with it.

  2. Your sketchbook unleashes your creativity. Your imagination truly has the freedom to flow, and whats great is that you can do more than just drawing! You can use a variety of mediums and really mess around which can really help to grow your creativity and innovation.

  3. Keeps you on top of your game! Keeping a #sketchbook is a great way to keep your skills sharp. You're not only improving in your creativity as my last point suggests, but also your technical ability. If you're a creative a sketchbook can be a vital part of the design process, in regards to getting your initial thoughts onto some paper. You may be able to determine what ideas work and which ones don't. You can also sketch random ideas that you have in your head and refer back to them at a later date. I know for me I love to paint/draw random miniature things, and often times it becomes inspiration for a project, or a larger piece of work.

There are of course many more reasons why I think everyone should keep a sketchbook, those are just my top three! It's definitely handy to always have a small one in your bag or pocket, even for jotting down random notes. And the more you use your sketchbook, the more you will improve!
